PBS Feature V/O ![]() International Best-Selling Author of "The Kite Runner", Khaled Hosseini, was recently in our Studio B to lay down voice over for "Hidden Treasures of Afghanistan" - an itinerant exhibit that will explore the rich cultural heritage of ancient Afghanistan, as well as other lines for an upcoming PBS Feature on the same topic. "Renovation Nation" ![]() Steve Thomas, Emmy-award winning host of television's most popular home improvement series, This Old House, was in our newly renovated Studio B to record voiceover for a new show with Planet Green. The show is entitled "Renovation Nation" and it premiered on June 4th, 2008 on the Discovery Channel. Artist Focus Pianist, Geoff Stradling has been leaving his mark on the music and entertainment industry for more than 20 years, composing and arranging scores for commercials, television and a few films you've probably heard of; Shrek 3, The Number 23, Flushed Away and the Simpson's movie to name a recent few. With all the extra time he has on his hands (Ha!) he found time to compose a collection of outstanding jazz tunes to put his own face on.
"Les is Mo" is the result and it is nothing short of brilliant... "The compositions are nearly flawless. Stradling is an excellent player, with an excellent band, and some fine composing abilities. Absolutely worth a listen. Mixed and mastered by Russell Bond, Geoff's long overdue debut release was immediately snatched up by Origin Records and has hit the ground running. Solid air play and accolades abound for Geoff's original approach to Jazz expression. JazzWeek says "Chartbound!" "This is a great sounding room!" Said Geoff, of studio A, "Vintage Neve with ProTools and an excellent live room and great staff. What's not to love? Thank you all" No! Thank you, Geoff. www.geoffstradling.com Critic's Choice Another project getting some well deserved attention is Rhoda Scott's "From C to Shining C" Here's an excerpt from one of several listener reviews - "... What also makes this CD so great is the production and recording quality... I'm serious... you've probably never heard a Hammond recorded so well, and may never again. Get this CD... buy it for your friends... and get the word out... All the best organ recordings weren't made 40 years ago... at least one was made this year!" - Eddie Landsberg / cdbaby

Google - Lively At long last we are able to reveal that the "top secret" project we have been working on for the past year has been none other than Google's new application - Lively. Google describes the application as a place where you can "create an avatar and chat with friends in rooms you design". The website just launched this Summer and can be found at www.lively.com.
Sound Director Kadet Kuhne had this to say of her experience working here at The Annex: "Working with The Annex to record the Lively avatar voices was a great experience. The staff's technical expertise and personable efficiency led to successful sessions every time, with state of the art studios and competitive rates. The quality and consistency of the recordings was of utmost importance, and they certainly delivered." The Annex was happy to provide casting services for the project from our large pool of local, Bay Area talent who helped bring life to the large array of avatars. Our newly refurbished Studio B was also put into full use with both its updated audio (Pro Tools HD) and video (Final Cut / AVID mojo) features. Bloody Drums Producer/Engineer Dan Long (Jealous Grilfriends, Pela) was recently in our Studio A to track drums for SF Indie outfit Film School's upcoming second release for Beggars Banquet.
My Bloody Valentine/Hope Sandoval drummer Colm O'Ciosoig is performing on two of the album's tracks that were recorded here that day after having been on a bit of a hiatus from the music scene since 2000's release of Hope Sandoval and the Warm Inventions' "Bavarian Fruit Bread". |

John, Greg and Camilo are currently putting the final mixes together and we'll soon have audio and all the details to share. In the mean time... Read the Article in Mix Magazine. Annex Production Partners Longtime Bay Area musician/engineer/producer John Greenham has joined our extended family and is currently running his operations out of our famed Studio C.
John has been an active participant in the Bay Area music community since leaping the pond from the UK in 1983. He soon found himself engineering with Paul Stubblebine at Rocket Lab and later as a member of the mastering team at Paul's facility in San Francisco. More recently, John is known for his work with Stephen Jarvis's Area 51 Mastering. Read More on John's move to The Annex. Annex owner Russell Bond egineered and mixed this legendary session that included the likes of drummer Idris Mohammed and guitarist Will Bernard. Along with a trio of brilliant horn players; Dayna Stephens, Michael Rinta and Gabe Eaton. So far we have heard and read nothing but great reviews of Wil's debut on Doodlin' Records. By Ernie Rideout - Keyboard Mag on-line Los Tigres Del Norte Los Tigres Del Norte - Still the hardest working band in show business!! This year, the trail-blazing group plans to release two new albums that will respectively pay-tribute to the musicians that came before them, and then of course continuing their modern day chronicles through corridos. On March 4th, Fonovisa Records released the new Los Tigres album RAICES ("Roots"). As the album's name details, this album finds Los Tigres sharing their take on some of the most culturally significant and historic titles from the songbook of Mexican folkloric tradition. The album's first single "Rumbo al Sur" Ð a famed ranchera with Tigres bassist Hernan Hernandez singing lead Ð is already in the Top-20 after just three weeks. The group has just wrapped recording at The Annex's Studio A on the second of these two releases, and though we don't know all the details yet, this time around the group approached the new record intending to capture the raw energy of their live shows. Expect to see it out either by the end of this year or early next! Check out more info and details at their new site - www.lostigresdelnorte.com. A visit from an old friend
Joan dropped by to see us again a few weeks later. This time with the Annex's Forrest Lawrence at the Neve, she returned to lay down some backing vocals on a song entitled "Lower Road" by a UK Artist that has remained hush hush up until this point. We'll see if we can dig deeper this year and find that track for everyone when it does come out. - www.joanbaez.com Operation:Mindcrime 2
At long last, progressive rock outfit Queensryche have finished the follow-up to their acclaimed 1988 release Operation:Mindcrime. recorded and mixed by producer Jason Slater and Co. in our Studio D, it was released back in early April with great fan anticipation, it has been highly praised and well received, most notable in Japan where it quickly climbed like a rocket to be the number one selling cd for several weeks straight.

Joan Baez has graced us with her presence twice this past summer and we couldn't be
happier here at The Annex. She first came to us to record vocals for her cover of
Malvina Reynolds classic "Little Boxes" for the Showtime original Series "Weeds".
The episode was finally aired on October 8th. Studio Owner Russell Bond helmed the sessions, which made for quite the intimate session as none other than Russell used to tend to Joan's mother's landscaping way back when, before his tenure as a top recording engineer and producer.
Congradulations to Jason Slater and Co. (which includes our own Chris Wolfe) and to all the guys in the band for their hard work in turning out another landmark CD.
